I am the BIM / Change Manager at Southern Regional College (SRC), overseeing the implementation of digital processes on their award-winning capital projects, as well as ongoing minor works and facilities management. I am an Architect and qualified Passive House designer, as well as a founding partner of a Belfast-based architectural practice. In 2016, I became an Innovation Technology Specialist with SRC where I developed several Level 4 & Level 5 BIM collaboration qualifications which I now deliver to industry. I am a member of the BIM Steering Group for Northern Ireland and Chair of the Royal Society of Ulster Architects BIM Task Group, having previously chaired their Sustainability Committee. I am also an artist having exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin) on several occasions including a solo exhibition with the Jorgensen Gallery.

What to expect during the event

At Southern Regional College’s new Higher Education and Innovation Centre in Newry, The Scope of Works for the design team, McAdam Design Ltd., included an innovation clause that specified the use of Generative Design to explore optimising the RIBA Stage 2 Concept Design. The generative design process ran alongside ‘McAdams’ design process. Both the optimised solution and the final proposed RIBA Stage 2 solution were assessed to see if the generative design might yield benefits in a live commercial project. SRC delivered a series of workshops to brief the design team on generative design software, which in this case was Revit, Dynamo and Autodesk’s generative design tool. Once ‘McAdams’ confirmed their proposed design concept as a solution to the SRC’s schedule of accommodation requirements, SRC developed the Python script in Dynamo with pre-determined input and output variables. The design team then confirmed elemental costs based on local market conditions and U-Values based on Building Regulations / BREEAM to ensure the generative design outputs were using the same inputs as the concept design at the end of RIBA Stage 2. This presentation will cover the following; The initial proof of concept in Dynamo. The creation of the Concept form in Dynamo. The Dynamo inputs and outputs. The challenges faced in writing the Python script. Lessons learned.
