Juan Ramón is an architect who has developed his career in digitalisation in the construction sector. With more than 15 years of experience, he has implemented digital processes for construction and engineering companies in several countries in Latin America, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

He specialises in developing applications that integrate BIM and GIS, connecting different types of data for the automation of tasks and reports for construction management.

He is currently the founder and CEO of Mello, a startup based in Spain that develops a digital twin for infrastructure construction management. He is also a professor of the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence for Architecture & Construction at the Zigurat Institute of Technology and was awarded with the BIM Hero in 2023.

Mind the Gap: Why Construction needs its own Digital Twin

Digital twins are often associated with asset management and operations — the final stage of an infrastructure’s lifecycle. However, one critical phase remains digitally underserved: construction.

This talk will explore how construction, despite being the most complex and risk-laden phase, is still largely disconnected from the digital workflows that drive design and operation. The result is a persistent gap where models become obsolete, data gets siloed and decisions are made with limited visibility.

Through real-world examples, the session will show how combining BIM and GIS in a unified digital twin can bridge that gap — not with static models, but with real-time, geospatially-aware environments. These construction-phase digital twins enable site teams to track progress, analyse deviations and respond to issues as they emerge, using inputs like drone imagery, point clouds, sensors, and AI-driven analytics.

Rather than focusing on future trends or theoretical frameworks, this presentation delivers practical insights and tested approaches already being used in infrastructure projects. It challenges attendees to rethink the role of digital twins — not just as post-construction assets, but as live tools that can actively improve project delivery, reduce risk, and close the gap between plan and reality.

If you're involved in construction management or digital delivery, this session will offer a compelling case for why your next project needs its own digital twin — right from day one.
