Brian Smith is an Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry and technology solutions professional with more than 30 years’ experience. This experience includes BIM, developing data driven solutions and workflows, creating data integration frameworks, consulting, training, and project management. He specializes working with CAD and BIM systems in production environments requiring delivery of a digital asset (or “Digital Twin”) at project handover. Brian is adept at performing BIM data and workflow analysis, model classification, model validation, product support and training.

In the past, Brian has provided customer support with the US Department of Defense and has commercial experience covering technical project management and team management operations with creative problem solving skills.

His many years of CAD and BIM experience spans many facets of the industry including Classroom Instruction, Live Distance Learning, eLearning, Solutions Consulting, Project Management and Professional Services Team Management.

In a past life Brian was a freelance Video Producer where he produced video segments on a variety of topics. His responsibilities included contacting field experts, script generation, shooting video, recording audio, and ultimately editing the footage, to deliver the final product.

In his spare time he is a keen tie-dyer and last drove his family across the US in an RV, from Las Vegas to Virginia Beach to take up residence in his new home.

Contemporary construction projects now require more data than ever before. With this comes the headaches of understanding the data requirements, managing how the data is entered, and ensuring the data is in the appropriate data stores. Not only that, but the data must also be accurate and easily navigated by the target audience.

The list of modeled element classification standards is daunting in itself. Many projects now expect modeled elements to have multiple classifications to be utilized not only during construction but for future uses such as computerized maintenance management systems, digital twins, and the like. Depending on the element category there could be many required parameters to be entered by different organizations. This means the collective modeling team must all be working together seamlessly to ensure the right parameter values are in the right place and formatted the right way, at the right time. Even something as simple as a date could be formatted incorrectly creating havoc when attempting to use it in an external system; YYYYMMDD is just not the same as DDMMYY. All the project data must be corroborated against the data standard and requirements. Staring at massive spreadsheets of data is simply not good enough anymore.
